How to choose yarn for a project
Begin with the fabric the project needs to create. Fine yarns produce smaller stitches and lighter fabric, while bulky yarns create larger stitches, more visible texture and faster progress. Fiber then changes the result again: cotton can give clean stitch definition, wool can add warmth and elasticity, and chenille creates a plush surface.
When a pattern is available, match its yarn weight and gauge before comparing colors. Calculate the quantity from the total meters or yards required rather than copying the number of balls, because ball weights and meterage vary between yarn lines. For substitutions, a swatch is the most reliable way to check size, drape and stitch definition.
