Worsted and Aran weight is the most widely used medium yarn weight, generally knit on 4.5-5.5mm needles. It works up noticeably faster than finer yarns while still giving good stitch definition, making it the go-to choice for sweaters, cardigans, blankets, hats, and mittens. Aran-weight yarns sit at the thicker end of this range and are especially popular for cabled and textured designs, since the extra body makes cables pop. Worsted weight is a favorite for beginner projects because patterns are widely available, gauge is forgiving, and projects finish in a reasonable amount of time. It's equally at home in wool for warm winter garments or cotton and acrylic blends for washable everyday pieces. If you want a project that balances speed with a polished, substantial finished fabric, worsted and Aran weight is usually the easiest starting point.
